Texas Panhandle Hunting Season Dates 2026–2027

Every fall, somebody shows up at a Panhandle lease a week early or a week late because they were working off a season they half-remembered from last year. Texas sets its hunting calendar by zone, and sometimes by county, and the Panhandle sits right where several of those lines cross. We outfitted hunts in this country for 27 years, and the most common mistake we saw from new hunters wasn’t a bad shot — it was the wrong weekend.

A quick note before the dates: Texas splits most deer seasons into a North Zone and a South Zone, and the entire Panhandle falls in the North Zone. If you’re used to hunting further south, or you’re new to Texas altogether, that’s the zone to look for on every regulation page — including this one.

Whitetail Deer Season

Whitetail is still the backbone of Panhandle hunting, and these are the North Zone dates for 2026–2027:

  • Archery-only: October 3 – November 6, 2026
  • General (rifle) season: November 7, 2026 – January 3, 2027
  • Youth-only weekends: one in late October and one in early-to-mid January — TPWD sets the exact days closer to the season, so confirm both against the current Outdoor Annual before building a trip around them.

If you’re hunting Palo Duro Canyon or the surrounding canyon country this fall, our Whitetail Deer Hunting guide covers tactics built for this terrain specifically, not general advice written for East Texas timber.

Mule Deer Season

Panhandle mule deer run on their own calendar, separate from whitetail, and the window is short. Archery opens alongside whitetail archery in early October. The general mule deer season is typically a tight run in late November into early December — two to three weeks, not the months-long stretch whitetail gets. Because the window is that narrow, confirm your county’s exact 2026–2027 dates before you take time off work to hunt it. Our Mule Deer Hunting guide covers where Panhandle mule deer actually spend their day, which matters more than usual on a season this short.

Rio Grande Turkey Season

This is the one that trips people up. The Panhandle is primarily a spring turkey destination — fall turkey season in Texas is limited to specific counties, and most of the High Plains isn’t included. Don’t assume your county is open for fall turkey just because deer season is; check it directly in the Outdoor Annual. Spring is the bigger opportunity here, typically running from late March into May, with TPWD finalizing exact 2027 dates over the winter. We’ll update this post once they’re official. Either season, our Turkey Hunting guide covers Rio Grande turkey patterns and calling tactics that hold up on open Panhandle ground.

Feral Hogs

No closed season, no bag limit, and it’s been that way for years — hogs can be hunted year-round on private land with landowner authorization. That makes them the easiest species on this list to plan around, whether you’re filling a freezer between deer seasons or giving a new hunter their first kill without waiting on a specific weekend. Our Hog Hunting guide covers the gear and tactics that matter most for the creek bottoms and river draws where Panhandle hogs actually live.

Prairie Dogs

Same story as hogs. Prairie dogs are unprotected nongame animals in Texas, so there’s no closed season on private land with permission. That makes them the best shoulder-season option on this whole list — something to shoot while you wait for archery or general season to open, or after your tags are already filled. Our Prairie Dog Shooting guide covers when the dogs are most active and what it actually takes to reach the distances this country demands.

Before You Head Out

A date on a page doesn’t mean much if your rifle isn’t sighted in or your rangefinder’s been sitting in a drawer since last January. Before archery opens in October, it’s worth going through what’s actually in your truck — our Recommended Gear picks cover what holds up in Panhandle conditions specifically, not just what’s popular nationally.

One more thing: TPWD sets these dates, not us, and they occasionally make adjustments in specific counties mid-cycle. This post reflects the most current 2026–2027 reporting available as of late August 2026. Always cross-check the official Texas Outdoor Annual before you finalize a hunt — especially for youth weekends, mule deer, and turkey, where the exact days can shift by county.
